B.Sc. Medical Technology programme

As technology advances and better investigative and treatment options are introduced, the need for professionals equipped to handle newer diagnostic modalities are on the rise. The ever changing & expanding horizon of the health care sector demands formal training programmes like B.Sc. Medical Technology and B.Sc. Medical courses in all its allied areas. The diagnostics sector today is witnessing tremendous growth in terms of volume and sophistication. With increasing advances and super specialisation, the scope for tomorrow’s technologists does not remain limited to just routine tests.

Advanced complex instrumentation & equipment require technocrats not only to operate but also to care & maintain them as well. These experts have to possess a strong scientific foundation & be able to perform at a much higher level than the traditionally trained technicians of the past. The students thus trained in the technological aspects of medical care with a strong scientific foundation will be in a position to competently assist the Physician or Surgeon, especially in high-tech medical procedures to cater to the healthcare industry globally.

SIHS offers a B.Sc. Medical Technology program with 9 specialisations: Cardiac Care, Respiratory Therapy, Imaging Sciences, Clinical Laboratory, Dialysis Technology, OT & Anaesthesia, Neurosciences Technology, Laparoscopy & Endoscopy and Ophthalmic Sciences.

"Specializations will be allotted in 2nd Year (Sem III) on merit basis of the first year of B.Sc. Medical Technology"

The B.Sc. Medical Technology and B.Sc. Medical courses at SIHS are delivered with a blend of practical and theoretical learning modules to help students become leaders of the industry. The complete learning experience makes SIHS one of the best BSc MLT colleges in Pune.

    TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The programme includes both theoretical & practical knowledge of the Diagnostic Investigations, Therapeutic procedures and Equipment as applicable to the health care sector today. It introduces students to emerging technologies and their applications. Students spend a considerable part of their learning time in hospital set-ups where they are exposed to actual 'hands on' practical training. Each student works on a project related to his / her specialisation.

The well-equipped health skill laboratories facility strives to provide high –tech simulated and virtually created hospital set-up for teaching, training and assessment for all health care professionals in clinical and related management skills making SIHS one of the best BSc MLT colleges in Pune. The broad objective is to align with the National Agenda of Skill Development to create a robust and vibrant ecosystem for quality education and skill development in the healthcare sector in the country. This simulation-based training is an integral part of education and training in Medical Technology and helps students to expertise the technical competencies followed by real time “Hands-On” practical training in hospital.

As part of their curriculum, students are taught additional modules on Management issues relevant to the respective specializations. The students are also trained in soft skills, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

The Global Immersion Program (GIP), Inter Institute Credit Transfer Program, Liberal Arts & Social Services exposes the students to the external world & helps in the overall development of the student.
There is emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach towards achieving professional success.

    EVALUATION

The evaluation will have both internal & external components. The internal component will be continuous throughout the semester & external component will be conducted by the university at the end of the semester. A student would be required to pass in each head (internal and external) independently. Students would be assessed according to the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system. Students would be awarded the Grade Point Average where grades would be awarded based on the class average. A student would be required to perform consistently well.

The Medical Technology programme will have a total of 120 credits in 3 years. Each credit is defined as 15 hours of teaching (Lecture or Lecture demonstration) or 30 hours of supervised practicals. Each credit is assessed for 25 Marks. For all external courses internal assessment will be of 40% and external assessment will be of 60%. Practicals will be 100% external. Internal courses will be evaluated 100% internally by the institute.

Satisfactory completion of the letter grade courses 'Integrated Disaster Management' and 'Core Environmental Studies' are mandatory for award of degree. Satisfactory completion of minimum 1-month observer ship with hospital after completion of semester II examination and 3 months of On Job Training with hospital/industry/Research organization after completion of final year (semester VI) examination is mandatory for award of degree.

    STANDARD OF PASSING

The assessment of the student for each examination is done, based on relative performance. Maximum Grade Point (GP) is 10 corresponding to O (Outstanding). For all courses, a student is required to pass both internal and external examination separately with a minimum Grade Point of 4 corresponding to Grade P. Students securing less than 40% absolute marks in each head of passing will be declared FAIL. The University awards a degree to the student who has achieved a minimum CGPA of 4 out of maximum of 10 CGPA for the program.

    INTAKE

BSc Medical Technology : 120 seats

    Orientation and Pedagogy

In the B.Sc. Medical Technology program, students undergo rigorous training for 3 years where they learn various modalities under their specializations and understand their working principles and their operations protocols.

Before they are deputed for clinical training, they are first sensitized and trained in developing and mastering the necessary techniques & skills required prior to exposure to hospital in a simulated environment.

They are then exposed to live cases and ‘hands-on’ training at Symbiosis University Hospital & Research Center (SUHRC), and associated healthcare organizations.

The pedagogy includes synchronous & asynchronous academic sessions, demonstrations, discussions, quizzes, presentations and practicals.

After completion of 1st year, students undergo “Observership”, equipping them with practical “hands-on” skills to enhance their career advancement, in various departments of hospital for a better understanding of the specialization they would like to pursue.

Students undergo Summer Internships & ‘On-Job Training’ (OJT) in the Hospitals - Private & Government, Healthcare organizations, Medical Equipment companies, Diagnostic centers & services & Research Institutes giving them a direct exposure to the Healthcare Industry.
